Liza Retz, a civilian activist from Vladivostok, published an appeal on her blog not about the coronavirus epidemic, but about Amur tigers. It's no secret that the population of these unique animals is declining every year, and in connection with the latest events referred to by Retz, they are threatened with complete destruction:
“Dear friends, tigers need help! I ask you to help save the Amur tigers in the Khabarovsk Territory. Everyone knows how beautiful, intelligent and unique animals they are and how vulnerable they are to humans. In the southern part of the Khabarovsk Territory, one of the last full-fledged Amur tiger groups in the region is concentrated in the Durmin and Khor river basins. According to monitoring data, up to 22 individuals were recorded here, which is comparable to the tiger population in the Sikhote-Alin Reserve, the largest tiger reserve in the Russian Far East. It is known that at least 11 cubs were born on Durmin and the adjacent territory over the past three years.
In the upper reaches of Durmin plan to mine gold. Open pits, building a camp, blasting, deforestation, laying roads, power lines, environmental pollution, poaching will destroy the tiger population. They have nowhere to go, especially because of massive felling, the number of suitable habitats has decreased.
Under the post are photographs of tigers who now live in the territory of the planned mine. We can very well lose these tigers and subsequent offspring if their habitat is destroyed.
