“The test site of Baikal-2000 LLC caught fire. Smoke extended from the city towards the tundra”, - writes Interfax, citing a source. The nearest houses to the landfill are located just a few kilometers from the scene.
This is not the first case of environmental damage in Norilsk in recent times. In late June, an enrichment plant near Norilsk carried out an unauthorized discharge of liquid waste in the tundra. The Investigative Committee began a check. Earlier in May, a massive oil spill occurred on the territory of the Norilsk thermal power station. About 20 thousand tons of fuel spilled from the depressurized tank and fell into the soil and local water bodies. An emergency was announced at the federal level. Criminal proceedings were instituted; the entire leadership of the thermal power station was arrested. Now the incident has been completely eliminated. Greenpeace estimated the damage to the environment by more than 100 billion rubles. Significant damage to the environment was caused because in the first hours after the incident, rescuers were inactive, according to the organization.
