The head of the Polish government Mateusz Morawiecki (pictured) made a proposal to hold an emergency EU summit on the situation in Belarus, where riots and harsh detentions broke out after the presidential elections.

Morawiecki made a proposal to the head of the EU Council Charles Michel and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

- After the presidential elections in Belarus, the authorities used force against their citizens, who demand changes in the country. We must unanimously support the Belarusians in their striving for freedom. Hence the initiative of the head of the Polish government to persuade the European Council to this issue, - RIA novosti quotes Morawiecki words, who noted that "Poland is responsible for its closest neighbors".

Let us remind you that the presidential elections in Belarus were held on August 9. According to preliminary data, Alexander Lukashenko gained 80.23%, his competitor Svetlana Tikhanovskaya - 9.9%.

After the polling stations were closed, protests began in the republic. During the riots, 213 protesters were detained. The police used stun grenades. One of the protesters, according to unconfirmed reports, died under the wheels of a paddy wagon.
