“On behalf of the Chancellor, I would like to again resolutely condemn the use of brutal violence against peaceful demonstrators”, - TASS quotes Seibert's words.
He added that the Chancellor particularly condemns the fact that thousands of Belarusians were "detained simply because of their participation in peaceful protests." He pointed out that Merkel was "appalled by reports that they were mistreated." Seibert stressed that this is "unacceptable".
According to a representative of the German government, Minsk must immediately "and without preconditions release people and ensure their right to assembly, expression and information".
He pointed out that "very many people" took to the streets of cities, leaving their jobs at the enterprise, "in order to peacefully declare their political opinion". This, Seibert is sure, reflects the dissatisfaction and despair of the country's citizens in connection with the situation and events around the presidential elections.
- The FRG government supports all people who peacefully express their will, which in a democracy is the right of every individual. The fact that this fundamental right is now being trampled underfoot in Belarus is unacceptable, the politician stressed.
He also promised that Germany will discuss the events in Belarus in the EU Council.
“In our opinion, it will be necessary to discuss sanctions against those who are responsible for violations of human rights”, - Seibert warned.
It should be reminded that the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen demanded to introduce additional sanctions against Belarusian officials, who are responsible for violating the democratic freedoms of citizens of the republic.
At the same time, Germany is decisively disposed on this issue, therefore, most likely, by the end of August, sanctions against Belarus will be introduced.
