President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko, who won the last elections, turned to the workers for support when it was already too late, said former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachyov.

“Lukashenko appealed for support to the workers, but it seems too late”, - Gorbachyov said in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda.

Gorbachyov believes that now the future international relations between Russia and Belarus will depend on how the conflict in the republic is resolved. Gorbachyov believes that outside influence is exerted on the events taking place in Belarus.

The former president of the USSR added that he himself appealed for support to the workers at one time in 1991, but did not receive proper support then. Gorbachyov left his post because he wanted to avoid a split within the state.

After the elections, protests erupted in Belarus. Residents of the republic are protesting against the voting results and demanding fair elections. The first rally in support of the current president was held on Sunday. On Monday, Lukashenko addressed the workers of the Minsk Wheeled Tractor Plant for the first time, where the workers went on strike. He threatened the strikers that they could lose their jobs if they continued to strike, and also said that new elections in the country would be possible only after the new Constitution was adopted in a referendum. Lukashenko ended his speech with the words “Now you can shout“ Go away ”and left. The workers started chanting “Go away”.

Strikes are already taking place at several large enterprises in Belarus. All workers had previously been called upon to go on a nationwide strike against the vote, as this is the only form of protest that police cannot arrest for. On Tuesday, the Belarusian Congress of Democratic Trade Unions called for the creation, along with the strike committees at Belarusian enterprises that have already declared a strike, a National Strike Committee to negotiate with the current government on behalf of the workers.

The Belarusian opposition has created a Coordinating Council for the transfer of power and is in favor of holding new, fair elections. The Council will conduct a dialogue with the current government. At this time, opposition candidate Svetlana Tihanovskaya announced that she was ready to become the leader of the nation. Lukashenko criticized the opposition's program , instructing his administration to prepare an answer to each item, the consequences of its implementation, and also stating that the council created by the opposition is an attempt to seize power in the country.
