Lithuania, as promised, repeated the action of solidarity that took place in 1989, when thousands of citizens lined up in a human chain, expressing a desire to secede from the Soviet Union. This time tens of thousands of Lithuanians expressed solidarity with the protesting Belarus in a similar way.

According to the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry, at least 50 thousand people took part in the action. The human chain lined up 35 km - from the Cathedral Square in the center of the capital to the Medininkai checkpoint on the border with Belarus.

“I am proud of the Lithuanians for their genuine unprecedented support to the people of Belarus in their ongoing struggle for democracy, justice and human dignity”, - wrote the head of the Lithuanian Foreign Ministry Linas Linkevichius.

Earlier, the Lithuanian journalist Andrius Tapinas wrote on his Facebook that the citizens of the country intend to repeat the action "Baltic Chain" ("Baltic Way"), which took place more than 30 years ago.

Similar actions took place in the capitals of Latvia, Poland, Belgium and Estonia.

The action in Riga gathered about four hundred participants, including President Egils Levits, Minister of Regional Development Juris Pute and the former mayor of the capital Oleg Burov.

The event in Belgium attracted about a hundred people, in Poland - several hundred, in Estonia - over a thousand.

We will remind that on August 23 in Belarus the demonstrations of those who disagree with the results of the presidential elections, summed up on August 9, continued.
