German Die Zeit wrote about this with the reference to its own sources. As the newspaper notes, the proposal was voiced by the United States in early August this year. The head of the German Ministry of Finance Olaf Scholz made a proposal. The head of the department noted that Germany is ready to invest one billion euros in the construction of two port terminals for the import of American liquefied natural gas in the ports of Brunsbuttel and Wilhelmhaven, but on condition that the United States waives sanctions against Nord Stream 2.
The United States has been hindering the construction of the gas pipeline for several years, believing that after its completion, Europe will be dependent on Russian gas. The first US sanctions against this project forced some companies to abandon the construction of the gas pipeline. Then Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Gazprom, which is implementing this project and has already invested about 10 billion euros in it, has enough resources to resume construction and complete it by the end of this year or in the first quarter of next year. Then the United States threatened with new sanctions against those companies that will help complete the project. Now the company has less than a hundred kilometers of pipe left to lay to complete the construction. In addition to the United States, several European countries are also against the end of the project. They are unhappy that Russia, when it implements this project, will refuse to transit gas through their territory. After the poisoning of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Germany is considering abandoning the project.
