The new chairman of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party of Japan Yoshihide Suga has been confirmed as the country's prime minister. His candidacy was approved by the majority of the parliamentarians.

This is reported by Kyodo agency.

Suga is to announce the new government soon. Earlier today, the entire current cabinet handed in resignation.

Some ministers must retain their positions in government, the Japanese media write, and Defense Minister Taro Kono is predicted to be appointed responsible for administrative reform.

The 65-year-old Shinzo Abe, who has served as prime minister since 2012, announced on August 28 that he was forced to leave the post due to health problems. Russian experts suggested that after his departure, the "Kuril issue" may become tougher.

Later, on September 14, the general secretary of the cabinet, Yoshihide Suga, was elected the leader of the ruling party.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry said that Tokyo is determined to develop relations with Moscow in various fields, including the conclusion of a peace treaty, the ministry’s message from RIA Novosti quoted RIA Novosti. The most pressing issue for many years between the countries has been Japan's claim to the Kuril Islands: Habomai, Shikotan, Iturup and Kunashir.
