Scientists from Tyumen State University (Tyumen State University) together with colleagues from other research institutes were the first in the world to discover a universal natural antibiotic that prolongs the resistance of pathogens to drugs.

The found substance, the authors of the study point out, will help to effectively fight most infectious diseases in humans and animals that are caused by bacteria and fungi.

The results of the scientists' work are published in the journal Applied Biochemistry and Microbiology.

Researchers in Tyumen note that one of the most important tasks of pharmaceuticals is the search for natural antibiotics that are capable of fighting microorganisms with multiple or absolute resistance to antibiotics available on the market.

For the first time in the world, TSU scientists have demonstrated the unique ability of the peptide emericillipsin A, which is isolated from an alkalofal micellial fungus. The experts noticed that the substance suppresses the ability of bacteria to form biofilms, and due to this, the resistance of pathogens to antibiotics is dying out.

According to the authors of the study, the main therapeutic feature of the studied substance is the versatility of its effect. Defenseless against him are not only these forms of bacteria, but practically any pathogenic eukaryotes, for example, micellial fungi and yeast.

- Eukaryotes - fungi and tumor cells - die due to the destruction of their cell membrane by the peptide, and the virulence of prokaryotes is suppressed by preventing the formation of biofilms, - RIA Novosti quotes the words of Evgeny Rogozhin, a senior researcher at the X-BIO laboratory of antimicrobial resistance at Tyumen State University.

The authors stated that emericillipsin A will help fight tumors and fungal infections. It is promising both as an independent therapeutic agent and as an element of complex preparations.

Let us recall that earlier Russian scientists found a way to treat coronavirus without ventilators.
