The head of state held a series of telephone talks with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, the Kremlin press service reported. The Russian leader pointed to the need to stop clashes in the region in order to introduce the exchange of prisoners and bodies of the dead.
“The foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia are invited to Moscow on October 9 to hold consultations on these issues with the mediation of the Russian Foreign Minister”, - the Kremlin’s statement says.
Let us remind that Vladimir Putin spoke on the phone with Nikol Pashinyan four times about what is happening on the territory of Nagorno-Karabakh. Later, the press secretary of the Russian president, Dmitry Peskov, said that the Kremlin would not provide assistance to Armenia within the framework of the Collective Security Treaty Organization and ensure the country's defense against external attacks from Azerbaijan in Nagorno-Karabakh.
On September 27, the situation in Karabakh became aggravated, from that day on the disputed territory the fighting continues. Martial law was introduced in Azerbaijan and Armenia and mobilization was declared.
The parties have disputed the ownership of Nagorno-Karabakh since February 1988. Then the region was part of the Azerbaijan SSR. In the 1992-1994 armed conflict, Baku lost control over Karabakh, as well as seven regions adjacent to it.
