According to TASS, former CIA and US National Security Agency (NSA) officer Edward Snowden announced his intention to apply for dual Russian-American citizenship. Snowden wrote about the decision on his page in the microblog Twitter.
“After many years of separation from our parents, my wife and I have not the slightest desire to part with our son. That is why in this era of pandemics and closed borders, we are applying for dual citizenship of the United States and the Russian Federation”, - he wrote.
In 2013, Snowden found himself in Russia after he published information in the Washington Post and Guardian newspapers about the methods of work of the American special services related to electronic surveillance of citizens and covert wiretapping of other people's telephone conversations. For the leak of confidential information related to security issues, the US authorities accused Snowden of espionage. In order not to go to prison for 20 years, Snowden was forced to flee the country. First he flew to Hong Kong, and then to Moscow, asking for asylum. In August 2014, the Russian authorities granted him a residence permit in the Russian Federation for three years, which was subsequently extended for the same period. In October 2020, Snowden received an indefinite residence permit in Russia.
According to RIA Novosti , Snowden said that he and his wife will remain Americans and will raise their son in the spirit of American values, for him a prerequisite is the freedom to express his opinion. At the end of December, Snowden and his wife should have a child, at the place of birth he will receive Russian citizenship.
