Ongoing repressions in Belarus confirm the loyalty of the position of the European Union, which never recognized Alexander Lukashenko as the legitimate president, said Nabila Massrali, EU spokesman for international affairs.

“The refusal to dialogue, aggressive statements, mass arrests and the use of ammunition intended to disperse the riots against Belarusians who use their right to strike and peaceful protest, again shows Lukashenko’s lack of legitimacy”, - Massrali wrote on her Twitter.

She stressed that "the European Union supports the people and will continue to apply sanctions to those responsible".

Let's remind that the protests in Belarus have been going on since August 9 - the day of the presidential elections in the republic. Citizens disagree with the official results announced by the electoral commission.

Last weekend, 231 protesters were detained. Criminal cases have been initiated against the detainees.

The opposition leader, a former candidate for the presidency of Belarus, continues to remain in Lithuania, from where Lukashenko continually makes new demands. Earlier, we will remind, a 13-day ultimatum was announced, which expired on October 25. By this time, Lukashenko had to voluntarily relinquish power. Since October 26, the opposition has declared a nationwide strike in the country .
