The reason for the US appeal to Russia was the diplomatic awkwardness that arose between Turkey and the United States: Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan did not find time to meet with US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo when he was visiting Turkey.
As a result of Pompeo's talks with French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian, he was the first to come to the conclusion that Russia should clarify some issues on an agreement to end the war in Karabakh, indicating the role assigned to Turkey in the truce achieved.
Representatives of the foreign affairs agencies of the United States and France spoke in detail about Nagorno-Karabakh and noted the significance of the actions taken by Russia in the settlement of the Karabakh conflict.
“But we also admit that there are many issues that the Russians need to clarify, such as the parameters of the agreement, including the role of Turkey”, - Kommersant is quoted as saying by a US State Department spokesman.
According to the State Department, during Pompeo's recent visit to Turkey, neither President Recep Erodogan nor Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu found the time to meet with him.
The Turkish President expressed his intention to send Turkish military to Azerbaijan, and he sent a corresponding decree to the parliament for approval.
An agreement to end the war in Nagorno-Karabakh was signed on November 9 between Azerbaijan, Armenia and Russia. According to the agreements reached, a significant part of the territory of Karabakh and several adjacent regions is transferred to Azerbaijan. Armenia must withdraw its troops from Karabakh, and Russian peacekeepers will replace them. As the representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova explained, there is no talk of the introduction of the Turkish military in Karabakh.
