The legendary Argentine footballer Diego Maradona has died at the age of 61. The cause of his death was reportedly cardiac arrest. The Argentine government has declared three days of national mourning.

Diego Maradona was considered one of the best football players in history during his lifetime. He was the World Champion in 1986, played for the teams of the football clubs Boca Juniors (Argentina), Barcelona (Spain), Napoli (Italy). The expression "Hand of the Lord" in relation to him arose after Diego Maradona scored the decisive goal against England by hand, but the referee did not notice this. In the same match, Maradona scored the “goal of the century” (video).

The brightest period in Diego Maradona's club career came during his performance for Napoli, whose colors he defended from 1984 to 1991. Together with the Neapolitans, he won the UEFA Cup (1988-1989), the Italian Championship (1986-1987 and 1989-1990), the Cup (1986-1987) and the country's Super Cup (1990), Soviet Sport notes.

In the 1990s, the athlete became addicted to drugs, which undermined his health and led to problems with the law. However, he managed to recover from addiction with the help of Cuban doctors.

Recently, Diego Maradona's health has deteriorated significantly. As early as November 3, three days after his 60th birthday, he was hospitalized with signs of depression. The footballer was treated at a private clinic in La Plata, a city 40 kilometers south of Buenos Aires, where he lived and coached the local team since the end of last year.

The next day, November 4, it became known that Argentine surgeons had successfully operated on the coach of the Argentine national football team - he had previously been diagnosed with a subdural hematoma. Accumulations of blood in the brain of Diego Maradona were identified back in La Plata after a head injury.

As reported by the Interfax agency , today, November 25, 60-year-old Diego Maradona fell ill in his home in the San Andres area of the city of Tigre, where he was recovering from brain surgery. Despite the efforts of the arriving doctors, the athlete died.

"I can't believe it, I'm completely devastated", - said Argentine President Alberto Fernandez. "This is the worst news an Argentinos Juniors fan could get. We love him. Trying to get in touch with his family". The head of state declared national mourning, which will last three days, RBC reports.

The head of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov also expressed his condolences. "The legend is gone...", - he wrote on his Instagram account, attaching to the publication a joint photo, which, presumably, was taken in Kazan. Diego Maradona flew to Kazan in the summer of 2018 for the games of the World Cup, - inkazan.ru notes.
