The former President of RAS Vladimir Fortov died

The former President of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) Vladimir Fortov passed away at the age of 74 on November 29. He was sick with coronavirus. But the cause of death has not yet been named.

“This morning, an outstanding Soviet and Russian scientist, President of the Russian Academy of Sciences in 2013–2017, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Evgenievich Fortov died. This is an irreparable loss for Russia, for Russian and world science, ” RIA Novosti quotes the words of the Deputy President of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vladimir Ivanov.

Fortov became a full member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in the Section of Physics, Energy and Radioelectronics in 1991. 1996 to 2001 he served as vice president of the Russian Academy of Sciences. In addition, in August 1996, he was appointed chairman of the State Committee of Russia for Science and Technology, then - Minister of Science and Technology, until March 1997 was Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation. In 2013, he was elected President of the Russian Academy of Sciences, gaining 58.3% of the vote. In February 2017, he received the support of the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Sciences for re-election, but before the elections withdrew his candidacy - as well as two other candidates. Soon he applied for the dismissal of the President of the Russian Academy of Sciences. After which he did not run for the post. Later, at the General Meeting of the Academy, he was elected to the post of Academician-Secretary of the Department of Energy, Mechanical Engineering, Mechanics and Management Processes of the Russian Academy of Sciences (OEMMPU RAS).
