According to the information publication AMN, citing Turkish media, two rockets were fired in the direction of Turkish aircraft. So, the newspaper points out, Greece checked the readiness of its complexes to protect its airspace, and also demonstrated Turkey's readiness to use weapons.
It is specified that the tests of the Russian system were carried out from 23 to 27 November at the test site on the island of Crete in the eastern Mediterranean Sea, off the coast of Turkey.
- The tests raise some questions, especially because NATO, in particular Washington, is categorically against Turkey's acquisition of the Russian S-400 system. Greek media previously reported that Athens had already conducted drills and tests to launch missiles from a Russian system from NATO territory in Crete, and that the tests were carried out in the presence of most military attaches accredited in Athens. Greece acquired the Russian system from Cyprus, which the country bought and was unable to activate due to Turkish threats, since in 1997 Cyprus was forced to abandon the system in favor of Greece in exchange for weapons and other military equipment.
It is noted that this is the first use by Greece of the Russian S-300 air defense system in many years. Experts, however, drew attention to the fact that today the capabilities of the "Favorites" are enough to shoot down fighters that are in service with Turkey.
Let us recall that the Russian S-300 proved to be unsuitable for the military conflict in Nagorno-Karabakh. Despite numerous missile strikes with the use of tactical missile systems, the anti-aircraft missile systems, which are in service with both Armenia and Azerbaijan, have never received combat use.
