Since December 10, the Rosselkhoznadzor (Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance) has banned the import of tomatoes and apples from Azerbaijan to the territory of Russia due to the detection of pests in these products.

According to representatives of the service, the Food Safety Agency of Azerbaijan has been repeatedly informed about the regular detection of quarantine objects in products.

"Only in the period from October 22, 2020 to the present, 17 cases of detection of objects quarantine for the Eurasian Economic Union - South American tomato moth and eastern moth - in fruits and vegetables (tomatoes, apples) have been recorded", - the department said.

Restrictive measures are aimed at maintaining phytosanitary well-being.

"In order to prevent the import and spread of these pests on the territory of the Russian Federation, the Rosselkhoznadzor is forced from December 10, 2020 to prohibit the import of tomatoes and apples of Azerbaijani origin into Russia", - stated in the statement of the service.

It should be reminded that Azerbaijan is the largest supplier of fresh and chilled tomatoes to Russia. Over the past year, 172.3 thousand tons of tomatoes worth $ 189.1 were imported from this country to the territory of the Russian Federation.

Let us recall that at the end of last year, the Russian Cabinet of Ministers expanded the list of goods prohibited from import from Ukraine. This measure was announced in response to Ukrainian sanctions on Russian goods.
