The USA is confident that Nord Stream 2 will never be launched

US Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Christopher Robinson said Washington intends to continue to impose sanctions on the Russian Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline until it is stopped.

"I would say that these sanctions are working and we will stop this pipeline. We do not want to impose sanctions, but we will use these powers and these tools to stop the project", - said Robinson during the Atlantic Council Internet conference. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.

At the same time, the State Department official believes that the termination of the construction of the gas pipeline will play a key role in improving the detachment between the United States and Russia.

“If we want a more stable relationship with Russia, or seek to improve relations with Russia, then we need to end and contain the detrimental influence of Russia on these future US-Russian relations, and therefore we must stop the Nord Stream 2 pipeline”, - said Robinson.

At the same time, Senator from the Republican Party Ted Cruz said that the construction of "SP-2" will never be completed.

“In my opinion, this project will never be launched, gas will never flow through this gas pipeline”, - the senator expressed confidence.

He added that the new restrictive measures against the project were prepared with "surgical precision" to send a signal to international investors. At the same time, according to Cruz, the Russian Foreign Ministry is engaged in "disinformation", assuring that construction will soon be completed. The politician stressed that after the coming to power of new President Joe Biden, Washington's position regarding the Russian gas pipeline will not change.

Let us remind you that on December 11 it was announced that work on the construction of the SP-2 was resumed. The pipe-laying vessel "Fortuna" has started work. Gazprom is left with less than 100 kilometers of pipe to complete the construction. The Russian company will complete its construction on its own after the introduction of American sanctions.
