The new coronavirus strain (VOC-202012/01), which was originally discovered in the UK, has been identified in 40 more countries. This is reported by TASS with reference to the epidemiological bulletin of the World Health Organization (WHO).

It is noted that a small number of cases of infection with the mutated virus have been recorded on the territory of these states. Earlier, the head of Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova, said that a new strain of coronavirus had not yet been found in Russia.

In addition, another strain of coronavirus (501Y.V2), information about which originally came from South Africa, was found in six more countries.

According to WHO, from December 28 to January 3, 4,035,226 new cases of coronavirus infection were registered in the world. During the same period of time, 76,017 patients died. Most infections occurred in the United States (1,325,424 cases), followed by the UK (343,784) and Brazil (252,018). Russia ranks fourth (186,539). Most deaths are also in the United States (17,239 deaths). Then there are Brazil (4,923) and Mexico (4,670). Russia is in sixth place with 3,728 coronavirus deaths in a week.

Let us recall that due to the spread of a new strain of coronavirus in the UK, a nationwide quarantine was introduced on January 6. People are only allowed to leave their homes to work, to the grocery store, hospital, pharmacy, or to play sports. Lockdown will last at least 6-7 weeks. During this time, it is planned to vaccinate over 13 million residents of the country.

At the same time, air traffic between Russia and Great Britain was suspended until January 12.
