People suffer from insomnia due to infection and negative emotional background

Insomnia, or, conversely, too long sleep, when there is no strength to wake up - these are the problems faced by nearly 40% of all COVID-19 patients. This was announced in an interview with Radio Sputnik by a doctor-somnologist, head of the sleep medicine department of the Moscow State Medical University named after I. M. Sechenov Mikhail Poluektov.

“At the onset of the disease, people lose sleep, or sleep worsens. Then, when the underlying disease develops, the person begins to sleep more than usual. When the statistics were calculated, it turned out that people infected with coronavirus infection, in about 37% of cases, experienced such problems with sleep. This is a fairly frequent occurrence”, - Mikhail Poluektov said.

At the same time, according to the doctor, sleep problems during a pandemic are observed not only in those who are sick, but also in those who are healthy. “People who did not have coronavirus also began to sleep worse because of the change in their habitual habitat. Because of isolation, people have decreased physical activity, there is constant information pressure of gloomy news. Together, this generates heightened anxiety. This heightened expectation of something unpleasant is the enemy of sleep. It was shown that approximately 30% of people who did not have coronavirus received sleep disturbances”, -said Mikhail Poluektov.
