Leonid Rink, one of the developers of Novichok, a military toxic nerve agent, announced plans to release in the nearest future a drug to combat COVID-19.

An antiviral and immunomodulatory drug called Immofon is intended to help treat the new coronavirus and other viral diseases.

“It works against viral diseases, perfectly restores cells after the work of its immune system, that is, it eliminates the cytokine storm (when the immune system begins to destroy the body - noted by the editor), Which, according to many experts, is one of the causes of death from COVID -19", - Rink explained in an interview with RIA Novosti.

According to the developer, the new drug for coronavirus is based on the drug "Diucifon" developed in the USSR in 1967. It was intended to treat leprosy.

"Diucifon" had a significant drawback: it dissolves poorly in blood plasma. Rink stated that he managed to fix this problem. He added the imported antiviral drug Dapsone to the drug for leprosy, as well as two molecules of methyluracil, which should activate the metabolism in the tissues of the body and stimulate the regeneration process.

Rink said that the drug he synthesized is shown in the treatment of lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, allergies, leukemia and lung diseases. The new drug has already been tested on 700 elderly volunteers who tolerated the therapy well enough.

"There was not a single severe stage and not a single death after infection", - Rink told reporters.

According to him, the production of pilot batches of the drug is underway and negotiations are underway with the Ministry of Health on the release of a new drug on the market. It is expected to come in the form of pre-filled syringes and droppers. The estimated cost of one dose of the new drug will be 1,000 rubles.

According to Rink, he started working on the creation of drugs in the 1990s - after he stopped participating in the development of chemical warfare agents.
