On January 26, Russian leader Vladimir Putin had a telephone conversation with Joe Biden, the US President-elect. He congratulated his American colleague on the start of work.

The Kremlin press service reports that in his conversation with Biden, Putin recalled that "normalization of relations between Russia and the United States would meet the interests of both countries and, given their special responsibility for maintaining security and stability in the world, the entire international community".

It is also reported that the heads of the two countries "expressed satisfaction" with the exchange of diplomatic notes on the agreement to extend the START-3 agreement.

Both presidents discussed topical bilateral and international issues. In addition, they considered opportunities for cooperation in the fight against COVID-19, as well as in other areas.

"Among the international topics were the unilateral withdrawal of the United States from the Open Skies Treaty, the problem of preserving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program, the internal Ukrainian settlement, as well as the Russian initiative to hold a summit of permanent members of the UN Security Council", - the Kremlin said.

The message says that the conversation was businesslike and frank.

At a briefing, White House press secretary Jen Psaki spoke to the American media about what other issues Biden and Putin raised.

"He called President Putin this afternoon to discuss our desire to extend START 3 by five years, to reaffirm our strong support for Ukraine's sovereignty in the face of ongoing Russian aggression, and to raise concerns, including the SolarWinds hack , reports of Russians nominating awards for US soldiers in Afghanistan, interference in the 2020 elections, the poisoning of Alexei Navalny, and the treatment of peaceful protesters by Russian security forces", - Psaki said.

On these points, we recall, Moscow denied the accusations.

Joe Biden took office as President of the United States on January 20. The inauguration took place against the backdrop of riots that swept January 6 in Washington.
