Over 200 protesters in Lebanon injured in clashes with police

In Lebanon, violent street protests against the effects of the economic crisis that has hit the country amid the coronavirus pandemic continue.

Citizens of the country, outraged by the authorities' inability to withstand the consequences of the pandemic and dissatisfied with the sharp drop in their incomes during a tough lockdown, demand that restrictive measures be lifted. They are convinced that the lockdown imposed by the authorities only aggravates their plight.

Representatives of low-income families complain of hunger. The center of the protests was Tripoli, the second largest city in Lebanon.

“The army was used to disperse the demonstrators. The protesters threw a combat grenade at the security forces and threw Molotov cocktails at the mayor's office", - Kommersant said in a statement.

According to the Lebanese Interior Ministry, as a result of a live grenade used by protesters in Tripoli, nine police officers, including three officers, were injured, one of them is in serious condition.

To suppress the unrest that engulfed the country, the police and the army use water cannons and tear gas, and fire warning shots into the air. Armored personnel carriers were brought to the streets of Tripoli. In addition to Tripoli, riots have engulfed the cities of Saidah and Tire in southern Lebanon.

This is the second powerful wave of protests to sweep the country after the mass protests of citizens caused by the explosions in the capital of the country Beirut, which occurred in August 2020.
