WHO: breast cancer for the first time became the most common form of oncology

Yesterday, on World Cancer Day, WHO released new global statistics on the disease. For the first time, breast cancer has become the most commonly diagnosed cancer type in the world. In 2020, it accounted for 11.7% of all new cancers.

Lung cancer accounts for 11.4%. Colorectal cancer accounts for 10%, prostate cancer 7.3% and stomach cancer 5.6%.

2.3 million cases of breast cancer have been diagnosed in women alone, with about 685,000 deaths from this type of cancer. The highest rates of breast cancer (new cases per capita) were observed in women in high-income countries.

Despite the alarming numbers, with timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment, breast cancer generally has a very good prognosis. “The number of women living today who have been diagnosed with breast cancer in the past five years is estimated at nearly 8 million. This is higher than for any other type of cancer”, - the WHO said in a statement.

According to WHO statistics, the global burden of cancer increased last year, totaling 19.3 million new cases and 10 million deaths. One in five people will develop cancer during their lifetime, and one in eight men and one in eleven women die from the disease.
