Borrell: EU-RF relations are at their lowest level because of Navalny's arrest

According to the High Representative of the European Union for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell, due to the situation with the arrest of Alexey Navalny, Russia's relations with the European Union have deteriorated greatly.

“We don't like escalation. But such cases as the situation with Navalny have lowered the level of our relations to the lowest in many years”, - he said in an interview with RBC TV channel.

Borrell called the situation with Navalny "not very good." He noted that the European Union is deeply concerned about "the internal situation in Russia, including political freedoms, the rule of law and human rights". At the same time, Borrell expects to continue cooperation with Russia - but first it is necessary to improve relations and reach mutual understanding.

It's worth reminding that Navalny was detained upon his arrival in Russia from Germany, where he was undergoing treatment after poisoning. He was accused of not being registered with the inspection in the Yves Rocher case, although he had to, as he had a suspended sentence. As a result, the sentence was changed to a real term. The court sent Navalny to a general regime colony for 3.5 years. He also goes to the accused in the case of libel against a veteran of the Great Patriotic War.

By the way, earlier Borrell demanded the release of Navalny. US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron and President of the European Council Charles Michel called for the same.
