The number of employed Russians in 2020 fell to 70.77 million, which was below the 2011 minimum, when the previous lowest figure was set. Before the onset of the covid pandemic, 72.4 million people had jobs in the country.

This is stated in the FinExpertiza study, the results of which are cited by Kommersant.

"During a pandemic year, the number of workers decreased by 1.65 million people - in such a number of jobs, the last time was reduced only during the financial crisis in 2009", - experts say.

Despite the fact that by December last year the number of employees had grown to 70.77 million, it could not recover to the level of a year ago.

The number of employed Russians was lower only in 2010.

Note that only in the first two working weeks of 2021 - from 11 to 25 January - 615.3 thousand Russians were left without work. In this regard, the government is proposed to introduce compensation for those companies that will hire unemployed people registered at employment centers from March 1 of last year to January 1 of this year.

As for the regions, residents of Kabardino-Balkaria, where the number of unemployed increased tenfold, in the Stavropol Territory, where unemployment increased eightfold, as well as in the Leningrad and Kaliningrad regions, in Karachay-Cherkessia and in the Crimea, fell the most rapidly.
