Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia resigned

Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia announced that he would leave his post because of their disagreement with the team over the arrest of the head of the opposition United National Movement party, Nikanor Melia.

"Unfortunately, due to the fact that I could not agree with the team on this topic, I decided to leave my post", - RIA Novosti quotes the words of the Prime Minister.

Giorgi Gakharia is sure that the detention of the oppositionist will put many citizens at risk.

The day before, the Tbilisi City Court ruled to arrest Nikanor Melia after he refused to pay bail in a criminal case for attempting to seize power in June 2019. Representatives of the United Opposition of Georgia (which includes leaders of the country's significant political forces) barricaded themselves at the headquarters of Mikheil Saakashvili's United National Movement. They are ready to provide "physical resistance" to the special forces of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, if they come to arrest Melia.

Last year, Nikanor Melia said the opposition would not stop protesting until new parliamentary elections were held in the country. Voting took place on October 31, 20200. MPs from 48 parties and two political blocs competed for 150 seats in parliament. After the counting of votes, the ruling party was supported by 48.2% of voters, while the United Opposition “Power in Unity” received 27.1% of the votes.
