New measures EU sanctions should be legally indisputable and directed against officials from Russian security agencies, Jean Asselborn believes.
Jean Asselborn noted that during his entire work (he has been the head of the Luxembourg Foreign Ministry since 2004), the crisis in relations between the European Union and Russia has never been so deep. The politician believes that Alexei Navalny needs to be released immediately, because "this is the decision of the European Court of Human Rights, in which Russian judges sit. Therefore, it is unacceptable for Moscow to talk about interference in internal affairs just because the Kremlin does not like the demands of the Strasbourg court".
It's worth reminding, on February 16, the European Court of Human Rights demanded that the Russian authorities immediately release Alexey Navalny from prison.
Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova called the demand of the European Court of Human Rights to release Navalny "with a salvo under international law, the consequences of which the ECHR does not measure".
On February 20, the Moscow City Court recognized Navalny's replacement of the suspended sentence with a real one in the Yves Rocher case as legal, and also refused to grant the defense the petition to release the oppositionist on the basis of the ECHR decision. Navalny will spend 2.5 years in a general regime colony. Also on February 20, the court found Navalny guilty in the case of libel against a WWII veteran and fined him 850 thousand rubles.
