The central bank plans to launch a pilot project to collect coins using special receivers in 2022. The project will be tested in one of the Russian regions.

The Basic Rules for Cash Circulation 2021-2025 states that collecting coins is necessary to improve the return of coins to circulation.

The Central Bank pointed out that the pilot project will be "focused on the population", it will be carried out with the involvement of a technology partner. The specific locations of the equipment installation and its quantity will be determined after the detailed requirements for the experiment are formed.

The regulator clarified that at the beginning of 2021 there were 69.126 billion coins in circulation with a total amount of 113.2 billion rubles.

"If in 2019 63% of the total number of issued coins returned from circulation to the cash desks of the Bank of Russia, then in 2020 the return of coins to circulation decreased to 46%", - the representative of the Bank of Russia noted.

Currently, equipment for collecting coins is on the market, but its use is not widespread due to the low profitability with high commissions for the population due to the small face value of the coin itself.
