Belarus became the largest debtor to Russia

The World Bank has published information on the debt of countries to other countries. According to these data, about 30 developing countries owe Russia about $ 22.9 billion in bilateral loans.

The largest debtor of Russia, indicated on the website of the World Bank, is Belarus, whose debt to the Russian Federation amounted to $ 8.1 billion at the end of 2019. At the same time, we recall that last year Moscow lent Minsk another $ 1.5 billion.

In addition, Bangladesh, Venezuela, India, Vietnam and Yemen turned out to be major debtors to the Russian Federation - more than $ 1 billion.

Together, African countries owe Moscow $ 973 million: Somalia, Mozambique, Ethiopia.

As for the Belarusian debt, it is worth noting that the Kremlin hoped for Minsk to refinance a part of the previous loans with the help of a new state loan. The money was provided to Belarus, as Russian President Vladimir Putin said, "at a difficult moment" - immediately after the election of the head of the republic, in which Alexander Lukashenko won again, but the citizens announced that the result was falsified.

It's worth reminding that in August 2020, the Belarusian Central Bank, in order to support the national currency, spent almost $ 1.4 billion from the gold and foreign exchange reserve.Since the beginning of 2019, the Belarusian currency has lost about 20%, and in August 2020, the Belarusian ruble reached a historic low.
