Over the past year, Russian hackers have stolen thousands of emails from US State Department officials, Politico writes, citing its own sources.

The publication indicates that this is the second large-scale hacking of the State Department's mail server in the last ten years, carried out "with the support of the Kremlin. As the sources told the publication, this time the hackers managed to get access to the e-mail of the Bureau of the US Department of State for European and Eurasian Affairs and the Bureau for East Asia and the Pacific.

One of the interlocutors told reporters that at the moment it is not known whether among the stolen letters there were files with any secret data. It is unclear whether this hack is part of a massive SolarWinds attack, which resulted in hackers gaining access to dozens of US federal agencies. Recall that the consideration of SolarWinds continues, said the press secretary of the US President Jen Psaki, talking about new possible sanctions against Russia.

The State Department did not comment on the information about the probable attack to the publication "for security reasons".

Earlier, the White House was not allowed to publish Russia's accusations of a cyberattack on American departments. An Associated Press source reported that an order was received not to release this statement. However, earlier US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that Russian hackers were involved in a large-scale cyberattack.

It's worth reminding that the resources of US government agencies were subjected to a massive cyberattack through the software of the also attacked Texas company SolarWinds on December 14, Reuters and The Washington Post reported. The hackers used for their own purposes the updates released by the company between March and June of this year for its Orion software. The publications reported on suspicions of involvement in this attack by the hacker group Cozy Bear or APT29, which are associated with the Russian special services.
