"The pandemic of the new coronavirus infection, which has become one of the strongest challenges for the health care system over the past century, has led to negative demographic trends - a decrease in life expectancy", - the Interfax news agency quoted Mikhail Murashko as saying.
In early April, it became known that, according to Rosstat data, in Russia in 2020 and the first two months of 2021, 223,905 Russians died in whom the coronavirus was detected, while the main cause of death was 122,180 cases. Decrease of the population of Russia in 2020 more than doubled - up to 688.7 thousand people compared to 316.2 thousand people in 2019. This figure is the highest since 2005. Population as of January 1, 2021 turned out to be minimal since the beginning of 2014.
In March, it was reported that life expectancy in Russia at the end of 2020 decreased from 73.3 years to 71.1 years. According to the government, it will be possible to return to the previous indicators only in three years, - lenta.ru notes. "Russian Deputy Prime Minister Tatyana Golikova said that the number of Russians vaccinated against coronavirus was eight million, while the population of Russia is 144.4 million. In 2030, the average life expectancy was supposed to reach 78 years according to the plans of the authorities", - notes RBC.
Decreases in life expectancy amid the coronavirus pandemic are also occurring in other countries. So, in the United States, in the first half of 2020, it decreased by a year (from 78.8 to 77.8 years) - this is the largest decline since 1943.
