The demand for coffee in Russia in the first quarter of this year increased by 20% in stores and more than 1.5 times in vending machines.

In physical terms, according to a study by the analytical resource "Check Index", the results of which are cited by TASS, offline coffee sales increased by 18%, and in vending machines - by 61%. According to experts, during the coronavirus pandemic, Russians have become accustomed to homemade coffee, and this year the trend has not abated.

"The Russians are addicted to coffee. This is evidenced by an increase in the volume of purchases against the background of last year's base, when in March there was a great demand for food categories, including tea and coffee", - experts say.

At the same time, the average purchase check decreased in the reporting period by 5% and amounted to 443 rubles. In 2020, the check was higher due to infrequent store visits.

Most often, Russians bought ground coffee and instant coffee in stores. When buying packs of coffee in vending machines, the average check reached 474 rubles, which is 17% less than in the previous year. Here Russians more often bought grain coffee.

Experts emphasize that citizens have become more choosy about coffee. For example, in large cities, the demand for grain and capsule coffee has grown significantly.

At the same time, scientists warn: changes in temperature and rainfall can lead to the fact that the most exquisite varieties of Arabica will disappear, and they will be replaced by ordinary coffee.
