On Sunday, an accident occurred on the cable car connecting the town of Stresa on the shores of Lake Maggiore and Mount Mottarone. The cable car crashed to the ground from a twenty-meter height, not reaching the top of the mountain a little. The only survivor was a five-year-old Israeli boy. Yesterday he woke up from an artificial coma and will soon be transferred from intensive care to a regular ward, according to The Guardian.
As a result of the crash of the cabin, 13 people inside died on the spot. The two children were taken to Turin's Ospedale Regina Margherita hospital, but only Eitan survived. According to doctors, from a clinical point of view, he is still in critical condition due to trauma to the chest and abdomen, as well as limb fractures. However, he is conscious, talking to his aunt, and in the next few days he will be transferred from intensive care to a regular ward. Doctors believe that Eitan was saved by his father: the man tightly hugged the boy during the fall and saved him from fatal injuries. Ethan's father, a physician, came to study at the University of Pavia some time ago and brought the whole family with him to Italy from Israel. Now the boy's school friends send him toys and letters. Next to him is his aunt, his father's sister.
On Wednesday, Italian police arrested three top managers of the cable car company. They are accused of deliberately disabling the emergency brake, which was supposed to prevent the cab from falling when the cable breaks. It turned out that in this way the cable car has been operating since the very moment it was launched at the end of April. The accident could have happened at any moment, but the first few trips went smoothly.
