The mother of former NEXTA editor-in-chief Roman Protasevich, arrested after an emergency landing of a Ryanair plane in Minsk, said that her son spoke at a press conference organized by the Belarusian Foreign Ministry after threats.

"He did it in order to save himself and his girlfriend", - she commented to Deutsche Welle. She noted that her son at the press conference was very depressed and also blinked nervously. "It is obvious that he is being severely threatened", - added the mother of the detainee.

At the same time, she noted that she did not see traces of torture on her son's body, in contrast to the previously recorded interview for the Belarusian state channel ONT.

Let us remind you that a press conference with the participation of Protasevich, organized by the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, took place on June 14. It spoke about the situation with the emergency landing of the Ryanair plane and the arrest of Protasevich and his girlfriend Sofia Sapega after her. Protasevich denied the information that he was being tortured after the arrest, said that he felt great. He called his parents and his girlfriend the real hostages of the situation.

Let us remind you that Protasevich was detained on May 23 after a Ryanair plane flying from Athens to Vilnius was forcibly landed in Minsk, allegedly because of a message about a bomb on board. The detainee had previously been prosecuted for organizing mass riots in Belarus after the elections in August last year. On the air of ONT earlier, Protasevich admitted his guilt. Protasevich's parents say that the confession is the result of torture. Protasevich's parents appealed to German Chancellor Angela Merkel with a request to assist in the release of their son.
