Flooding in Germany: at least 80 people killed, 1.3 thousand missing

According to Bild , Ahrweiler suffered more than others from the flood, there is currently no telephone connection, which means that many residents cannot be reached.

At least fifty people died in the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate, another 30 in North Rhine-Westafia. The police believe that the death toll may rise.

The floods in Germany were caused by heavy downpours and affected Belgium and other neighboring states. In Belgium, flooding killed nine people. Residents of the Dutch Limburg were urged not to approach the rivers, as they can overflow the banks. The boat owners have been asked not to travel on them yet. In the lakes of Switzerland, the water level has risen to dangerous levels. The traffic on dangerous sections of the roads was blocked. It has been raining in Switzerland since Monday.

At the time of the incident, German Chancellor Angela Merkel was on a visit to the United States. She indicated that the scale of the tragedy can be seen only in the coming days.
