Olympic motto changed for the first time since 1894

The corresponding decision was made on July 20 during the 138th session of the IOC. Recall that the previous motto "Faster, higher, stronger" is a phrase spoken by the French priest Henri Didon at the opening of sports competitions in his college. Pierre de Coubertin liked this phrase. He felt that it reflected the goal of athletes around the world. The motto was approved by the first Olympic Congress in 1894 and appeared on the front page of the first issue of the IOC Official Gazette.

Dmitry Svishchev, a member of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture, Sports, Tourism and Youth Affairs, believes that the current slogan of the Olympic Games is in line with the spirit of the times. “There used to be three main words. But many years have passed since 1894. Then there were no engines, there was practically no light. Life is moving forward, sports are changing, new disciplines and technologies are emerging both in everyday life and in sports”, - NEWS.ru quoted him as saying.

Meanwhile, the upcoming Tokyo Olympics, postponed from 2020 due to the covid pandemic, is causing serious public concern. The Japanese themselves are not happy with the competition in a tense epidemiological situation. To date, 67 people involved in the Olympics have been infected. The Olympic Games are set to start on July 23rd and run until August 8th.
