Figure of the day: the level of education of women in the country has exceeded that of men

The traditionalist family, where the husband is more educated than the wife, is becoming the least popular model of marriage in Russia.

In Russia, women are beginning to significantly outperform men in terms of the “quality of human capital,” the type of traditionalist family is becoming a thing of the past, experts from the HSE Center for Labor Studies report in their article, quoted by the Interpreter blog:

“The level of education of women is growing at an outstripping pace, which has led to the emergence of disparities in the educational structure of the male and female population.

Over the past 20 years, there has been a significant transformation of the educational structure of the population. Among women, the proportion of people with higher education increased in 1995-2015. by almost 13 pp - from 15% to 28%; among men, the corresponding increase was 6 pp - from 16 to 22%. If in the mid-1990s the proportions of men and women with higher education were approximately equal, then by the end of the period under consideration there is a pronounced gender asymmetry in favor of women.

More and more women were married in which their husbands had a lower level of education (hypogamy): the representation of such couples increased by about 5.5 percentage points - from 31.1% in 1995 to 36.6% in 2015 ...

The traditionalist family scenario, where the husband is more educated than the wife (hypergamy), is becoming the least common model of marriage in Russia; already in the mid-1990s. hypogamia turned out to be more "popular" than hypergamy: in 1995 the share of hypergamous pairs was 18.2%, and Russia in the 1990s. was one of the countries in the world with the lowest levels of hypergamy. By 2015, this share had changed insignificantly, amounting to 17.4%”.

It is surprising that at the same time, patriarchal relations still reign in Russia, which are best manifested in the authoritarian regime of power. Most likely, this is due to the fact that changes in public consciousness are hopelessly lagging behind even the level of education.
