There are no direct elections for the head of the republic in North Ossetia. The head is elected by the parliament. The candidates for the post are proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to "Sputnik North Ossetia", Valery Balikoev and Medea Eldzarova also claimed the post of head of North Ossetia.

At the same time, 57 deputies voted for the 61-year-old Menyailo, 0 against, and there were no abstentions either. “Our task is to make every citizen's life calm and comfortable. Residents of the region must see and understand that we are working for the common good. This is what I hope to work on with your support”, - Menyailo said after the election.

It should be noted that in 2008 Menyailo commanded a group of troops of the Black Sea Fleet in the Abkhaz direction during the operation to force Georgia to peace. In 2014–2016 headed Sevastopol, then worked as the plenipotentiary of the President of Russia in the Siberian Federal District. In April 2021, he was appointed Acting Head of North Ossetia.
