PIC OF THE DAY: Russia starts exporting "sculptural freaks"

Russian diplomats erected a monument to Gagarin in the park of a provincial Portuguese town.

Russia is not only itself rapidly filling up with sculptural monsters, but also successfully exporting them abroad. Here is the most recent example: on October 17, a monument to Gagarin was erected in the park of the Portuguese town of Keiras to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the first manned flight into space. The ceremony was attended by the Russian Ambassador to Portugal Mikhail Kamynin, several officials from the local mayor's office and Russian compatriots living in Portugal.

For the sake of such a case, Kamynin even made a beautiful (unlike a monument) comparison of Portugal and Russia: the Portuguese Magellan was the first to go around the world on a sailing ship, and the Russian Gagarin was the first to fly around the Earth in a space ship. But it’s just not clear why a great country, which the employees of its Ministry of Foreign Affairs undoubtedly consider Russia to be, erect such miserable monuments in its honor? And another question concerns the Portuguese, who in the most mysterious way allowed to put this miracle at home...
