Former Energy Minister Sergey Shmatko dies of coronavirus in intensive care

Former Minister of Energy of the Russian Federation Sergey Shmatko has died of coronavirus. He was 55 years old.

A week ago, the former minister was diagnosed with this disease. He was hospitalized in the 52nd hospital, where on the evening of November 7 he died in intensive care, according to the Telegram channel Baza.

The Ministry of Energy expressed condolences in connection with the passing of the former minister. "Sergey Ivanovich was one of the most authoritative leaders of the fuel and energy complex, made a great contribution to the development of the energy sector, solving the most important tasks at the state and international levels", - said Russian Energy Minister Nikolay Shulginov.

He added that his death is an irreparable loss for the domestic energy sector. In the memory of everyone who knew him, he will remain "a brilliant professional, responsive and kind person", - the minister said.

Sergey Shmatko was Minister of Energy from 2008 to 2012. Since 2013, he has worked as the President's Special Representative for International Cooperation in the Electricity Industry. He was also a member of the Public Council of the Russian Ministry of Energy.
