In 2013, on Valentine's Day morning, six-time Paralympic short-distance champion Oscar Pistorius shot and killed his girlfriend, model Riva Steenkamp. Pistorius fired four large-caliber bullets at the toilet door in his house, behind which the girl was. The Olympian claimed that he imagined the presence of an intruder, but the police claimed that it was in fact a domestic crime.
In 2014, Pistorius was found guilty of manslaughter and sentenced to six years in prison. Later, the crime was re-qualified, and the athlete was now isolated for premeditated murder for 13 years and 5 months.
By July of this year, Pistorius had served half of his sentence, AFP reports. This is the minimum period after which parole can be considered. However, before doing this, the Department of Corrections needs to negotiate with the victim's family and the perpetrator. Only after this emotionally difficult procedure can Pistorius' papers be transferred to the parole board. The parents of the deceased girl, according to the services that contacted them, are still shocked by her loss.
A year before the assassination, Oscar Pistorius became the first-ever double amputee to compete in the Olympics. In 2012, in London, he reached the semifinals of the 400-meter distance. Pistorius competed in hydrocarbon prostheses, which earned him the nickname Blade Runner. Prior to his crime, Pistorius was a role model and role model for people with disabilities around the world.
