Globally, 6.8 billion doses of vaccine are administered annually and 6 billion syringes are produced. A shortage can lead to not having enough syringes for the usual injections for common illnesses, as well as to attempts to reuse needles.

By 2022, the world could face a shortage of 1-2 billion disposable syringes for vaccinations, according to the World Health Organization . The root of the problem is that since the start of the pandemic, production capacity has ceased to keep up with the pace of vaccination: now, 6.8 billion doses of vaccines are injected annually in the world and 6 billion syringes are produced.

If the situation remains the same, then next year there may not be enough syringes for ordinary injections for common diseases. In addition, in poor countries, people may try to reuse needles, which is risky because even when sterilized, dangerous bacteria can remain on the needles.
