A native of Kazakhstani Uralsk, Seule Omarov (pictured), was detained by American police for shoplifting in 1995. Earlier, on November 2, US President Joe Biden nominated Omarova to the post of head of the Treasury Department of Foreign Exchange Control.

According to Fox News, charges were dropped against Omarova in 1996 as part of the Wisconsin program for first-time offenders.

The White House was informed that it was aware of Omarova's detention. Moreover, she continues to be supported.

“Saule was completely open about this incident throughout her career, including in the Senate, when she applied when she worked in the Treasury during the administration of George W. Bush”, - the channel quoted a White House spokesman as saying.

In the near future, the start of hearings on the candidacy of 55-year-old Omarova will be announced. They will be followed by a vote on whether the profile Senate committee recommends her candidacy.

Seoul Omarova worked as an exchange student at the University of Wisconsin after graduating from Moscow State University and working at a university. In the United States, she received her doctorate in political science, became a professor at Cornell University.

She later went to work in the administration of US President George W. Bush.
