The number of veterans and participants of the Great Patriotic War in Russia during the coronavirus pandemic has decreased by more than 300 thousand people.

According to Vedomosti and the Ministry of Labor, since the beginning of the epidemic, 312,689 participants and veterans of the Great Patriotic War have died in the country.

“In April 2020, there were 1.21 million veterans in the country. As of October 2021, there are 896,806 people left, "the Dozhd TV channel notes * (recognized as a foreign agent - ed.)

The loss of population among the direct participants in the war reached 26% during the pandemic, the total number of veterans and disabled veterans of the Second World War decreased to 31,484 people.

Today in the country there are only 865 322 living veterans of the Great Patriotic War. Of these, 458,921 are home front workers, 255,091 are widows of invalids and war veterans, 76,035 are former underage prisoners of concentration camps, 74,119 are blockade, 1102 are residents of besieged Sevastopol, another 54 have the status of adult prisoners of fascism.

The coronavirus pandemic has dealt a devastating blow to the country's population, including the older generation. Among pensioners over 85, the death rate in 2020 was 190 people per thousand. At the end of the current year, the predicted mortality rate may reach 209 people per thousand.

Demographers note that until 2019, the mortality rate among veterans and pensioners over 85 years old was decreasing, but now an increased mortality rate is observed in all age groups over 30 years old. Especially often women die after 60 and men over 65. Today the overwhelming majority of victims of covid are people over 60 years old, among the dead 83%. Today, every ninth infected person over 60 years old dies from covid. If retirees delay the visit to a doctor, then among those who applied late for medical care, the mortality rate triples: in this category, every third person dies. Also, maternal mortality in the country has tripled during the covid pandemic.
