Olaf Scholz becomes the new Chancellor of Germany

8 декабря 2021, 14:54
The leader of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, Finance Minister Olaf Scholz was elected to the post of Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.

395 out of 736 deputies voted in favor of Scholz, while the required minimum is 369 votes. 303 people voted against, and six abstained.

Recall that Scholz replaced Angela Merkel, who held this position for 16 years, as German Chancellor. Merkel decided not to run again.

The government coalition will include the Social Democrats, representatives of the Free Democratic Party of Germany and the Greens. This is the so-called traffic light coalition - it got its name from the colors of the party symbols of the three political forces. This type of coalition at the federal level will operate for the first time in the FRG.

Olaf Scholz became the country's ninth chancellor.

From 2007 to 2009 he was the Minister of Labor, from 2011 to 2018 he was the burgomaster of the city of Hamburg, from March 2018 Scholz headed the German Ministry of Finance and at the same time was the Vice-Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany.

It's worth reminding that on October 26, German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, in accordance with the country's Constitution, asked Angela Merkel to act as Chancellor until a new government is formed after the parliamentary elections.

Merkel ruled Germany for 15 years and 338 days. Today she has become the acting chancellor of Germany. If, on December 19, Merkel still remains in office, she will break the record held by her political godfather Helmut Kohl, who was in power for 16 years and 26 days.
