Photo of the Day: Hong Kong Scientists Release First Snapshot of Omicron Strain

8 декабря 2021, 12:01
Specialists from the University of Hong Kong have obtained an image of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus using an electron microscope. They published the resulting photograph.

The Omicron strain captured by scientists is located in a monkey's kidney, experts say.

At low magnification, the micrograph shows damage to cells with swollen vesicles. They contain small black particles - this is a virus. High magnification photomicrograph shows aggregates of viral particles with spikes in the form of a characteristic crown on their surface.

Earlier, Hong Kong scientists were able to isolate a new COVID-19 strain from clinical samples. This made it possible to develop and produce vaccines against Omicron.

It's worth reminding that this variant of covid has caused serious concern in the World Health Organization, as this variant of the virus has gone through 32 mutations. Scientists do not yet know how dangerous it is to people, as well as whether the current vaccines protect against it and whether it can for sure. elicit test systems. Cases of infection with this strain have already been identified in 50 countries.
