British court allowed Assange's extradition to the United States

Today, December 10, the London High Court decided to uphold the US appeal for the extradition of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange. The defense has the right to challenge the verdict. If extradited to the United States, Assange faces 175 years in prison.

According toRIA Novosti, the Court of Appeal of England and Wales considered the appeal from October 27 to 28, but announced the decision only now. The Court of Appeal returned the extradition case to Westminster Court. At the moment, Assange remains in custody.

“Julian Assange is world famous for his material exposing the illegal actions of the United States during the military operations in Afghanistan and Iraq. The journalist published data on the killing of civilians during the hostilities, as well as on the conditions of detention in the American prison of Guantanamo in Cuba, "RIA Novosti reports.

In 2010, Assange was accused of rape and harassment in Sweden, but the case was closed two years ago. Since June 2012, he has been hiding at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London, fearing extradition, and on April 11, 2019, he was detained at the request of the United States. Since then, the founder of WikiLeaks has been in the Belmarsh maximum security prison.

In the United States, Assange faces up to 175 years in prison or the death penalty. He is presented with 17 new episodes of violation of the law, including espionage, disclosure of classified information, connections with hacker groups.

Russia and Mexico were ready to grant asylum to the disgraced journalist, but he refused .

In the summer, Ecuador stripped Assange of his citizenship.
