The first case of "Omicron" was registered in Karelia

A citizen who returned from France to Karelia has been diagnosed with a new strain of the coronavirus "Omicron", said the head of the Republican Ministry of Health Mikhail Okhlopkov.

He clarified that the patient had no complaints, her condition was assessed as satisfactory.

It's worth reminding that Omicron spread from South Africa in November. There, more than 3.3 million people fell ill with covid, of which more than 90.5 thousand died. The vaccination rate in the country is low: only 26% of the population received vaccinations.

Doctors from South Africa believe that the Omicron coronavirus strain is 70-80% less dangerous than the Delta strain.
