The first death in Brazil due to infection with the omicron strain was recorded in the state of Goias. It is reported by the G1 edition.
According to Brazilian media reports, the victim of the South African mutant strain was a 68-year-old patient who suffered from chronic diseases.
Previously, the patient was diagnosed with hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, "Tsargrad" notes.
Before being infected with the omicron, the Brazilian was vaccinated with three doses of the vaccine.
The doctors said that the patient fell ill on December 20. He developed a cough, shortness of breath, and his condition gradually worsened. First, the patient was hospitalized, and then transferred to intensive care.
The presence of the omicron strain in him was revealed after his death. The test was positive on January 6th.
Earlier, doctors indicated that the first symptoms of infection with the omicron strain are similar to those of a cold.
The omicron strain was first identified in South Africa in November this year. WHO experts indicated that due to its extreme contagiousness, this strain is of serious concern. To date, the omicron has been found in more than 110 countries.
